Gaiagraphy

The term Gaiagraphy is used to describe a spatial measurement of the living planet. The term 'Gaia' is a Greek word for the Goddess of the earth. Gaia has become a catch-all term to describe the living attributes of the earth.

Gaiagraphy identifies:the core of a community within its sense of place. Growth of the community is dependent upon the harmonious relationships of regional and international influence. Gaiagraphy identifies patterns that affect: community and individual health, war and peace, prosperity and decline, harmony and discord. While not the great panacea, gaiagraphy points towards pathways for positive futures.

Robert Muller, a United Religions supporter and former Assistant General of the UN, when asked to explain the word 'gaiaphily', responded:

'It comes from Gaia, the Greek name of the goddess Earth (hence gaiagraphy, gaialogy, gaiametry, gaiaphysics, etc. distorted later by male scientists into geography, geology, geometry, geophysics, etc.) meaning the description, the science, the measurement and the physical aspects of the Earth, words all derived from Greek. Phily is also a Greek word which means love. Thus philanthropy means the love of anthropos (man or humanity). I coined the word gaiaphily because in our time we must also love Gaia, our precious Mother Earth.'

As we continue to grow as an ever interconnected humanity new models are needed to sustain human culture. Gaiagraphy is one such tool. As a study of our living planet, gaiagraphy looks at the human species as being symbiotic with the earth's living biology: an expression of planetary consciousness. Gaiagraphy sees the earth as having similar biological systems as found in every other biology on earth- fractal geometries of the whole system.

Gaiagraphy includes the study of social structures. Gaiagraphy looks at human settlement as an organic biology - a living expression of our planet. Human settlement and social organizations of scale coalesce synchronistically into geometric patterns that nest into the living planet - Gaia. Recognizing and utilizing this tendency of nature facilitates the biological and spiritual relationship with our living planet.

The phi proportion is 1:618... The one is a God number and the signature for life. Phi is a natural state that is full of life and found throughout the human body, in plants and other animals. There is geometry in galaxies, in stone, in the structure of cells, in bee hives, and in the way the human organic social structure develops and interacts with our host biology, Gaia.

This study evolves from the ancient science of geomancy. Gaiagraphy attempts to modernize this ancient technique that was the fore runner of the geo sciences. Used primarily for siting temples and churches, it attains a high expression found in the Imperial City in China, Stonehendge and the cathedral constructs of the Gothic period. Geomancy was coined by the British as a term to describe Feng-Shui in China. In pre Maoist China the doctors of Feng-Shui advised all on the proper placement of temple and home to insure good luck and the harmonious flow of chi or life force. Feng-Shui translates to wind-water; like earth energies, they are clear and hard to hold.

Gaiagraphy's greatest utility is in the scale of city, corporate, and nation planning. While highly effective for individual place studies, gaiagraphy also looks at how an individual relates to a greater geometric community. Western feng shui practitioners, for the most part, approach the home as an isolated entity, communicating with immediate surroundings and improved by use of color, mirrors, landscape elements, entry design, building configuration, and referenced to the octagonal quadrants. Western Geomancers identify ley energy lines, underground water, and magnetic vortexes, in their pursuit of harmonious placement. Both techniques are effective alternatives to elevate the stress of sick houses, geopathic zones, and blocks to the positive flow of chi or life force. Gaiagraphy considers the wholistic community scale, examining how the macro impacts the micro.

There are two schools of thought in geomancy: western and eastern, each being culturally appropriate. Gaiagraphy synthesizes many of the tools developed by these two school of geomancy. Gaiagraphy is a rational tool for spatial integration utilizing modern cartographic modeling, geometries of scale, and existing geographic patterning. Gaiagraphy is a 21 century science of placemaking.
